Ewing Township is exited to announce that we have been confirmed as a Tree City USA in 2026.  Tree City USA status is awarded by the National Arbor Day Foundation and helps to raise awareness about trees and the importance of urban forestry to our quality of life.

Becoming a Tree City USA will lay the groundwork for a brighter, greener future for our township, setting Ewing up as an environmental leader for years to come.  It will reflect our commitment to sustainability and green spaces within our community.  This designation will help us to engage and educate our residents on the importance of trees, creating a community collaboration aimed at planting, maintaining, and caring for our green spaces.

We understand that trees are not just about aesthetics — they are critical to how we manage stormwater, reduce flooding, improve air quality, and keep our neighborhoods cooler and healthier. Our investment in maintaining and expanding our tree canopy is part of a broader commitment to building a stronger, more resilient community for our residents.”  

To qualify as a Tree City USA community, Ewing met four core standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. These standards were established to ensure that every qualifying community would have a viable tree management program and that no community would be excluded because of size. 
The standards are: 

• Standard 1: A Tree Board or Department. The members of the Ewing Environmental Commission / Ewing Green Team serve as Ewing's Tree Board.
• Standard 2: A Public Tree Care Ordinance.  Ewing has a tree ordinance adopted by Township Council in November of 2020, Ordinance 20-18.  The purpose of the ordinance is to protect the township tree canopy and regulate the indiscriminate and excessive cutting of trees within the township.  This document gives the Public Works Department has the authority to manage street trees and those in Ewing parks and open spaces, recommend the list of street tree species that can be planted, and to regulate other arbor work.
• Standard 3: A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita.  Ewing has been regularly exceeding this amount for a number of years. 
• Standard 4: An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation. Ewing typically proclaims and celebrates Arbor Day as the day after the official national Arbor Day.  We have celebrated the event on the last Saturday in April since 2018. [2026 Proclamation]
