Profile of Ewing Township

General Information about the Township of Ewing, County of Mercer, New Jersey

The Township of Ewing was officially established in 1834 and today covers an area of 15.6 square miles.  The average elevation is 125’.  It is in Mercer County, in the heart of central New Jersey.  Its location along the Delaware River, midway between Philadelphia and New York, with a regional airport, rail lines and interstate highways altogether position Ewing as an attractor. The Township is approximately 35 miles from Philadelphia and about 60 miles from New York City.   It is a first-ring suburb of Trenton, New Jersey’s capital city, directly to its south.  Hopewell Township is on its northern border and Lawrence Township on the east. The Delaware River forms the western boundary.

Population

The war and post war years (1940s – 1960s) were the time of Ewing’s greatest population growth, stabilizing from about the 1970s forward, when change occurred only in relatively small increments.  As of the 2010 Census, the population was counted at 35,790.

Transportation

Interstate 95 runs through the northwestern part of the town.  Main roadways include State Highways 31 (Pennington Road) 29, and 206.   There is also ready access to US Highway 1. The Township is also serviced by a passenger rail line.  The West Trenton Railroad Station [schedule] is the terminus of Septa’s West Trenton Line and conveniently serves commuter traffic to and from Philadelphia.  NJ Transit provides bus service to and from Trenton.  Trenton Mercer Airport (TTN) is the County-run airport in our northwest corner and it is served by Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air.

Noted Institutions

Ewing is home to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) formerly, Trenton State College, which moved to its present location off Pennington Road during the early to mid-1930s. 

Numerous governmental facilities including the New Jersey State Police headquarters, the Jones Farm State Correction Institute, the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, the New Jersey Department of Transportation headquarters, and the Katzenbach School for the Deaf call Ewing home.  The town’s main commercial area is located on Olden Avenue. 

Einstein Alley

Einstein’s Alley is the research and technology center of New Jersey.  It is more than a geographic confluence of technology companies in our area, however, it is an economic development organization that works to promote and attract innovative research-based companies and knowledge-based jobs by bringing together key resources that help businesses meet their needs. 

Central Jersey has a plethora of key business attractors.  Major roadways such as the NJ Turnpike, I-95 and I –295, a large available educated work force, and major universities and nearby colleges, headed by Princeton and Rutgers with state-of the art research facilities.  Ewing, with its location along key transportation facilities such as I-95, ready access to Route 1, and Trenton Mercer Airport, is a natural fit for businesses.  Ewing became an Einstein’s Alley municipality in September 2013.

Major businesses and employers that call Ewing home include:

  • New Jersey Manufacturers (NJM Insurers Group)
    NJM, NJ's largest writer of workers' compensation and one of NJ's largest providers of auto insurance, is headquartered on Sullivan Way in Ewing.  It has resided in town since 1966.

  • Church and Dwight
    Church and Dwight manufactures and markets a wide range of personal care, household and specialty products, under the ARM & HAMMER brand name and other trademarks. In 2013 Church and Dwight moved their corporate headquarters to Princeton South Corporate Park on Charles Ewing Boulevard. 

  • ETS
    Educational Testing Service (ETS), the nonprofit educational measurement organization, is located on Phillips Boulevard in Ewing.  The ETS Ewing office provides many of their operational, customer-service and systems activities. They write contract proposals, assist customers and score tests and more.

  • CA Technologies
    CA Technologies is an American multinational publicly held corporation that ranks as one of the largest independent software corporations in the world.  They opened a location in Princeton South Corporate Center in 2013.

  • FMC
    FMC Innovation Center, the company’s worldwide research and development headquarters, is focused on cutting edge initiatives to bring new chemistries to market that are safe, effective, green and sustainable.  It is located at Princeton South Corporate Center.

  • Courtyard by Marriott
    The Courtyard by Marriott is located on Scotch Road near Trenton Mercer Airport.  As with all Ewing businesses, guests are just minutes from The College of New Jersey.  Other nearby attractions include Princeton University, Rider University, Sesame Place, Six Flags® Great Adventure, and Sun National Bank Center in Trenton that hosts family shows, sporting events and concerts.

  • The Element
    Ewing is the proud home of New Jersey’s first LEED-certified hotel, Element Ewing Hopewell.  The Hotel is located only minutes away from Trenton Mercer Airport and is committed to sustainability in all its practices, even offering a curbside charging station for electric vehicles for area residents and guests alike.  Located on Sam Weinroth Road East.

  • SpringHill Suites
    Location is key with this Marriott property.  SpringHill Suites Ewing, is located right off I-95, only 10 miles from Princeton University, minutes from The College of New Jersey and 5.6 miles from Washington Crossing State Park.   It is conveniently close to Ewing’s newest corporate center, Princeton South

Parks and Open Space

Ewing has award winning recreational facilities with numerous athletic playing fields and 8 municipal parks that serve as the focus of its recreational programming, as well as two community centers and pool complexes, and the (county-owned) Mountainview Golf Course.   The Delaware-Raritan Canal State Park also offers outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to walk, run, bike along the scenic Delaware River.   Canal Park parking is available in a number of locations in Ewing: at Wilburtha Road, West Upper Ferry Road, Lower Ferry Road, and at Scudders Falls [Access -- Rte 29 North from Exit 1 of I-95 in NJ. First (and only) left after interchange.]  

Elected Representation

Ewing is in the 12th Congressional District and the 15th Legislative District. 

Federal Representation

Current representatives for the 12th Congressional District are Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman and Senators Cory Booker and Bob Menendez

State Representation

Current representatives for the 15th Legislative District are State Senator Shirley Turner and Assemblypersons Reed Gusciora and Elizabeth Maher Muoio.  The current Governor is Chris Christie.

County Government

Ewing is in Mercer County and is governed by the County Executive, Brian Hughes and a Board of Chosen Freeholders.
