Scoop the Poop Reminder

Did you know that approximately thirteen hundred dogs live, play and poop in our community?

Scoop the PoopCan you imagine the mess were all of their owners to fail to “scoop the poop?”  In truth, nothing is more annoying than stepping out on your front lawn or walking along a public trail to find that you’ve been “gifted” with the residue left behind by a thoughtless dog walker.  We share this gentle reminder that picking up after your dog's waste is important for the overall health of our community: your health, the health of your pet, and our environment.

Did you know that one gram of pet waste contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria?  Pet waste does NOT belong in our waterways.  It can suffocate aquatic animals, insects, and fish. Fecal coliform bacteria can cause pneumonia, fevers, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and possible vomiting in humans.  Either bag it and dispose of it in the trash or flush it down the toilet.  Be sure to remove from the plastic bag before flushing.  Picking up after your dog by “scooping the poop” can assist in removing harmful nutrients and bacteria from local streams and waterways and the Delaware River, keep our citizens healthy and our yards and shoes clean.

Scooping your dog's poop isn't just common courtesy; it's the healthy and environmentally sound thing to do, AND it's the law!  Township ordinance prohibits dog owners from allowing their pet’s waste to remain on private or public land.

Healthy Scooping Tips

  • Always clean up after your pet on walks and remind your neighbors and friends to do the same.
  • Don't allow the need to scoop to accumulate in your own yard - keep an eye out and scoop immediately.
  • Take multiple bags on walks, just in case.
  • Throw out dog waste using a bio-degradable bag OR flush waste down the toilet (where it will eventually end up in a wastewater treatment plant).
  • Do NOT throw dog waste in a compost bin.
  • Start a campaign to get your community involved, installing pet disposal facilities, poop scoopers and other convenient items to encourage locals to clean up after their pets.
